Spiritan Centre for Empowerment and Humanitarian Support

About Libertas Domus (Freedom House)
The centre, Libertas Domus (Freedom House), is a legally owned project of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost Fathers and Brothers- Spiritans. It is founded in 2024 by Fr. Samuel Udogbo, C.S.Sp. Libertas Domus (Freedom House) is motivated by the strong belief and commitment to improving the human condition and the status of communities that are bypassed and left behind in the implementation of the existing global and regional blue prints including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union’s (AU), Agenda 2063-The Africa We Want and other Regional Economic Community Initiatives.

The name, Libertas Domus (Freedom House), is derived from the principles of Potentia, Libertas et Dignita – Power, Freedom and Dignity, and the Centre is a place to bring unique, efficient, effective, accountable and ethical perspectives and expertise to the issues of empowerment and capacity building to support communities in need.

Who are the Holy Ghost Fathers and Brothers (Spiritans)
The Congregation of the Holy Ghost Fathers and Brothers was founded on May 27, 1703, in Paris by Claude-François Poullart des Places and later Francis Libermann due to a merger in 1848. The primary mission of the congregation is to evangelize the poor and marginalized. The Congregation is currently represented in over 60 countries across all the continents of the world. It arrived in Nigeria in 1885 and was established in Benue state in the 1930s. The Congregation has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Nigerian people and its society. Apart from its evangelization work, it has worked and is still working with and for the many people suffering from poverty and oppression; conflict and violence; inequality and marginalization of different kinds, especially against women and children; and facilitating initiatives geared toward mitigating the impacts of climate change, global warming and the loss of land.

Why Libertas Domus (Freedom House)
We have an unprecedented number of people on the move; a growing number and complexity of crises across the continent of Africa and elsewhere; and thus, a need for a flexible humanitarian response is more pressing than ever. We know that when a crisis occurs, people’s lives change in an instant; death, injury, displacement of men, women, girls, and boys (internally and externally), and the destruction of infrastructure and institutions affect people and communities take place. Moreover, the lack of protection that many of our brothers and sisters experience in everyday life exacerbates the problem of exclusion and inequality; these need urgent resolutions. Hence, the birth of Libertas Domus (Freedom House).

Where does Libertas Domus (Freedom House) work?
The centre is located in Makurdi in Benue State, Nigeria. Our primary contact is Benue state but we are open to working with any community within the country that needs our services.

Who does Libertas Domus (Freedom House) work with?
The main targets of the initiative are the people and communities that are at the margins of our society, displaced persons due to socio-political crises and the host communities. However, we also work with individuals, religious institutions, government and private organisations.
